Can People See Through Solar Shades at Night? By Makan Rakhshan / December 15, 2025 Nighttime Privacy Explained by Blinds Concept – Serving Halifax, Charlottetown & Atlantic Canada Solar shades are one of the most popular window coverings for daylight comfort, glare control, and UV protection. But a common and important question we hear from homeowners is: Can people see through solar shades at night? At Blinds Concept , we provide custom solar shades and privacy solutions for homes and businesses across Halifax, Dartmouth, Charlottetown, and all of Atlantic Canada .
This guide explains exactly how solar shades perform at night, what affects visibility, and how to ensure full privacy after dark. The Short Answer 👉 Yes — people can see through solar shades at night if your interior lights are on. Solar shades are designed primarily for daytime performance , not nighttime privacy. Understanding why this happens helps you choose the right solution for your home. Why Solar Shades Work Differently at Night Solar shades rely on light contrast to provide privacy. During the day: Outside light is brighter than inside → you can see out, but others can’t see in.
At night: Interior lights are brighter than outside → visibility reverses, allowing people outside to see in. This applies to all openness levels , from 1% to 10%. Does Openness Percentage Matter at Night? Solar shade fabrics are rated by openness percentage , which indicates how tightly woven the fabric is.
Openness Level Daytime Visibility Nighttime Privacy 1%–3% Minimal view, strong glare control Low 5% Balanced view and light Low 10% Maximum view Very low ✔ Lower openness helps slightly ✖ None provide true nighttime privacy on their own Best Rooms for Solar Shades (and Where to Be Careful) Ideal Spaces Living rooms Sunrooms Kitchens Offices Waterfront or scenic views Use With Caution Bedrooms Bathrooms Street-facing windows Ground-floor urban homes For private spaces, solar shades should never be the only layer .
How to Get Nighttime Privacy with Solar Shades At Blinds Concept, we design layered window solutions that give you the best of both worlds. 1. Solar Shades + Roller Shades Solar shades for daytime glare and UV control Roller or blackout shades for nighttime privacy This is one of the most popular combinations in Halifax condos and PEI homes . 2. Dual (Zebra) Shades Sheer mode for daytime visibility Privacy mode for nighttime coverage A sleek, modern solution with flexible control. 3.
Solar Shades + Drapery or Curtains Softens interiors while adding privacy Ideal for larger windows and living spaces 4. Motorized & Smart Window Coverings Automatically close privacy layers at sunset App, remote, or voice controlled Ideal for smart homes and large windows Blinds Concept installs professionally certified motorized systems , ensuring smooth operation and long-term reliability. What About Exterior Lighting? Exterior lighting can slightly reduce nighttime visibility into your home, but it does not eliminate it . Interior light levels will almost always dominate.
That’s why we never recommend solar shades alone for privacy-sensitive areas. Why Choose Blinds Concept?
