How to Install Double Curtains

Double curtains layer a sheer or light filtering panel behind a heavier blockout panel. Each layer operates independently — install needs careful bracket choice and patience.

Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced. Time required: 60–90 minutes.

Prepare your tools: Drill, spirit level, pencil, screwdriver, measuring tape, wall plugs, a double curtain rod set or double ceiling track and brackets.

Understand the double layer system: Double curtains use two layers — typically a sheer or light filter at the back closest to the glass, and a blockout or heavier curtain at the front. Each layer operates independently. You'll need either a double rod (two rods on stacked brackets) or a double ceiling track with two glider rows.

Mark bracket positions: Position the double rod or track 10–15 cm above the frame and extend 15–20 cm beyond each side. Mark all positions with a pencil and spirit level.

Install centre support bracket (if required): For spans over 150 cm, install a centre support bracket that accommodates both rod layers.

Pre-drill and secure all brackets: Pre-drill and fasten all brackets. Check level across every point.

Mount the double rod or track: Secure the double rod into all brackets. The back rod holds the sheer or light filter; the front rod holds the blockout or feature curtain.

Hang the back curtain first: Attach the back layer (sheer or light filter) to the back rod or back glider row. Distribute fabric evenly across the full width.

Hang the front curtain second: Attach the front layer (blockout or feature) to the front rod or front glider row. Distribute fabric evenly.

Check independent operation: Open and close each layer independently to confirm they operate without tangling or dragging on each other.

Dress both layers: Form pleats or waves on both layers by hand and allow 48 hours to settle.

Frequently asked questions

Which layer goes in front?

The heavier blockout or feature curtain goes in front (room-side), with the sheer or light filter behind closer to the glass. This protects the sheer and gives the cleanest layered look.

Can I add a second layer to existing curtains?

Sometimes — a second-track add-on bracket can mount in front of an existing rod. Confirm wall clearance and bracket strength first.

Are double curtains worth it over a single blockout?

Yes if you want daytime privacy with diffused light (sheer) and on-demand full darkness (blockout). One layer can't do both.
