How to Install Light Filtering Curtains

Light filtering curtains diffuse daylight while keeping the room private. Install is the same as sheers — just heavier, so brackets and supports matter more.

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Time required: 30–60 minutes.

Prepare your tools: Drill, spirit level, pencil, screwdriver, measuring tape, wall plugs, a curtain rod or track and brackets.

Choose rod or track: Light filtering curtains suit both decorative rods and wall or ceiling-mounted tracks depending on heading style. Eyelet headings suit rods; pinch pleat and wave headings suit tracks.

Mark bracket positions: Position the rod or track 10–15 cm above the frame and extend 15–20 cm beyond each side. Mark all positions with a pencil and spirit level.

Pre-drill and secure brackets: Pre-drill pilot holes and fasten all brackets. Check level across every position.

Mount the rod or track: Secure the rod into brackets or clip the track into its mounting brackets.

Hang the curtains: Attach according to your heading: eyelet curtains thread onto the rod; pinch pleat hooks attach to gliders at even spacing; wave headings attach to wave gliders at the manufacturer's spacing.

Dress the fabric: Distribute fabric evenly. Form pleats or waves by hand and allow 24–48 hours to settle and drape naturally.

Check length and stack back: Confirm the desired length (above floor, at floor, or slight break). When open, curtains should stack back fully clear of the glass to maximise light entry.

Always use wall plugs when mounting into plaster or masonry. Confirm brackets are rated for the curtain and rod weight before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have privacy in the day?

Yes — light filtering fabrics offer good daytime privacy while letting daylight through.

How much fabric stack-back should I plan for?

Allow roughly 1/6 of the fabric width on each side when open, then extend the rod that far past the frame so the glass stays clear.

Can I use light filtering curtains in a bedroom?

Yes for ambience, but they won't darken the room. Pair with a blockout roller behind, or step up to blockout curtains.
