Motorised curtains run from a powered track with the motor housed at one end. Plan power before brackets, set the open and close limits carefully, and you'll have effortless daily operation.
Difficulty: Advanced (hardwired install requires a licensed electrician). Time required: 75–120 minutes (excluding hardwired electrical work).
Prepare your tools: Drill, spirit level, pencil, screwdriver, measuring tape, wall plugs, the motorised curtain track system and confirmed access to your power source.
Plan power source location: Motorised tracks need a power source at the motor end. Confirm whether you're using a plug-in motor (nearest outlet) or a hardwired motor (requires a licensed electrician). Plan track orientation so the motor end is closest to the power source.
Mark track mounting positions: Mark the ceiling or wall mounting positions for the track brackets. Position the track as close to the ceiling as possible for maximum coverage. Extend 15–20 cm beyond the frame on each side. Use a spirit level to ensure all bracket marks are perfectly horizontal.
Pre-drill and secure track brackets: Pre-drill all bracket positions and fasten securely. For ceiling mounting into plaster, locate ceiling joists where possible for maximum load bearing.
Mount the motorised track: Clip the track into all secured brackets. Ensure the track sits firmly and doesn't flex or sag between bracket points. Add additional brackets if the track spans more than 150 cm without support.
Attach curtain hooks or gliders: Thread the curtain hooks or gliders into the track channel. Space gliders according to the manufacturer's recommended spacing for your heading type.
Hang the curtains: Attach the curtain heading to the gliders, distributing the fabric evenly across the full track width.
Connect power: For plug-in motors, connect the power cable to the nearest outlet — route it discreetly using a cable cover if needed. For hardwired motors, this step must be completed by a licensed electrician.
Set open and close limits: Using the remote or programming button, set the fully open position limit and the fully closed position limit. This ensures the curtains stop accurately at each end without over-travelling or straining the motor.
Pair with smart home or app (optional): If your motor is Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled, download the manufacturer's app, follow the pairing steps and set up any automation schedules you want.
Plug-in for retrofits where an outlet is nearby; hardwired for new builds or where you want zero visible cable. Hardwired must be installed by a licensed electrician.
Re-run the limit setting — the motor may have lost a step. If it persists, the track may have an obstruction or a glider has jammed; clear it before retrying.
Yes — most of our motors integrate via the supplied hub. Pair the hub to Wi-Fi, then add as a device in the smart-home app.
Sometimes — the existing track has to accept a powered motor head, which is rare on standard rods. Usually it's cleaner to replace the track and motor as a kit.
