How to Measure Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are a permanent, custom-fit installation. Spend an extra five minutes measuring and you'll save yourself weeks of regret.

Width Measurement: Measure the inside width of your window frame at three points — top, centre, bottom — and record the smallest. For outside mounts, measure the entire wall area you want to cover, extending at least 100 mm beyond the window frame on all sides.

Height Measurement: Measure the inside height at three points — left, centre, right — and record the largest for inside mounts. For outside mounts, measure from where you want the shutter to start (usually above the window) to the bottom of your desired coverage area.

Divider Rail Rules: If your panel height is 1500 mm or greater, a divider rail is required to keep louvres operating smoothly. Measure from the bottom up to where you'd like the divider positioned (typically aligned with the window's sash line).

Obstruction Check: Measure the depth of your window recess from the front of the frame to the glass. You need at least 70 mm clearance for brackets. Note any handles, cranks or locks and the distance from the frame edge to the obstruction.

Squareness Test: Measure diagonally from top-left to bottom-right, then top-right to bottom-left. If the two diagonals differ by more than 10 mm, your window is out of square. We can still fit shutters — just flag it on your quote so we build with a Z-frame.

Frequently asked questions

Can shutters fit a window that isn't square?

Yes. We build a Z-frame that absorbs the out-of-square so the panels still operate cleanly.

How big can a single shutter panel be?

Most products cap a single panel at around 900 mm wide and 1500 mm tall. Beyond that we add panels or a divider rail.

Do divider rails block the view?

They're typically 25–35 mm tall and we align them with the window's sash so they almost disappear.

Can I install shutters myself?

Inside-mount is doable for a confident DIYer. Heavy or wide units, off-square frames or specialty shapes are best handled by our installers.
