Nestled by the lake in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, this beautiful home combines waterfront serenity with refined interior design. The homeowner wanted window treatments that honoured both — something elegant enough to match the stylish interiors, yet functional enough to handle the light and privacy demands of lakeside living. The answer: Roman shades in a stunning designer fabric, with a smart mix of motorized and cordless operation throughout the home. A Combination of Motorized & Cordless Not every window in a home needs motorization. In this project, we took a practical, room-by-room approach — motorizing the shades on large, high, or hard-to-reach windows where manual operation would be inconvenient, and using cordless spring mechanisms on standard-height windows where a simple pull of the bottom rail is perfectly comfortable. This combination strategy gives the homeowner the best of both worlds: the luxury and convenience of motorization where it matters most, and the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of cordless where it makes sense. Both systems are child-safe, cord-free, and deliver the same beautiful Roman fold — the only difference is how you operate them. Stylish Designer Fabric The fabric selection is what elevates these Roman shades from functional to extraordinary. The homeowner chose a richly textured designer fabric with a sophisticated weave pattern that catches light beautifully throughout the day. The colour palette complements the lakeside setting — soft, natural tones that echo the water, sky, and surrounding landscape visible through every window. Roman shades are one of the few window treatments where the fabric is the star. When lowered, the panel lies flat and smooth, showcasing the full beauty of the material. When raised, the fabric gathers into structured horizontal folds that create depth, shadow, and visual interest — like a sculptural accent at the top of each window. Why Roman Shades Suit Lakeside Homes Lakeside properties in PEI enjoy stunning natural views, but they also face practical challenges: morning sun reflecting off the water, afternoon glare during the golden hour, and the need for evening privacy in a setting where neighbouring properties may have sightlines across the lake. Roman shades handle all of these gracefully. When lowered, they provide complete privacy and effective light control — filtering or blocking sunlight depending on the fabric weight and lining. When raised, they stack neatly at the top of the window, leaving the glass completely unobstructed so you can enjoy the full panoramic lake view. The soft fabric construction also adds acoustic warmth to rooms with large windows. Glass reflects sound, which can make lakeside living rooms feel echoey and cold. Roman shade fabric absorbs and dampens that reflection, creating a more intimate, comfortable atmosphere. Motorized Shades with Smart Control The motorized Roman shades in this home are operated via a multi-channel remote and are compatible with smart home platforms. The homeowner enjoys automated routines — shades lower for privacy as the sun sets over the lake, and rise again in the morning to greet the waterfront view. Individual channel control allows precise adjustments to any single window without affecting the rest. Cordless Shades for Everyday Ease The cordless Roman shades use a reliable spring-balance mechanism — pull the bottom rail down to lower, give it a gentle tug to raise. The shade locks at any position, and the spring tension is factory-calibrated for smooth, consistent operation over years of daily use. No batteries, no charging, no remote to keep track of — just simple, tactile control.
