Cassette Awnings: A Canadian Buyer's Guide to Full Cassette Retractable Awnings

A retractable awning turns a sun-baked deck or patio into somewhere you actually want to sit. The full cassette design has become the go-to style for homeowners who want that shade without leaving fabric and arms exposed when the awning is not in use.

This guide explains what a full cassette awning is, how it compares with other retractable styles, where it works best, and what to think about in a Canadian climate before you order. We supply and install cassette awnings across Atlantic Canada and ship them elsewhere in Canada and the USA.

What is a full cassette awning?.

A full cassette awning is a retractable awning whose fabric, roller tube and folding arms close completely into an aluminium housing, called the cassette, when the awning is retracted. From the street it looks like a slim box on the wall. When you extend it, the front bar moves out and the arms unfold to hold the fabric taut over your seating area.

Because everything is enclosed, the fabric is protected from rain, snow, pollen, bird droppings and sunlight whenever the awning is closed. That is the main reason people choose a cassette over cheaper open designs.

How it differs from open-roller and folding-arm awnings.

All three designs use folding arms to project the fabric. The difference is how much of the awning is covered when it is rolled up.

Where a cassette awning works best.

Cassette awnings suit any outdoor space attached to a wall with enough height to mount the housing and enough room for the arms to extend.

Choosing fabric and colour.

Awning fabric affects comfort as much as appearance. Lighter colours reflect more heat and feel brighter underneath, while darker colours give deeper shade and hide weathering better. Solid acrylic fabrics are the most common choice for residential awnings because they hold their colour outdoors, and patterned or striped fabrics can echo the trim or brick of the house.

It is worth looking at samples outside, against your own siding, in daylight. A colour that looks neutral indoors can read very differently against white vinyl, cedar shingles or red brick. We bring fabric samples to site visits in Atlantic Canada and can send swatches to customers elsewhere.

Sizing: width and projection.

Width is usually set by the wall: most people shade the full length of a deck or the width of a door plus some margin on each side. Projection, how far the awning reaches out from the wall, determines how much ground it actually shades, and the angle of the sun changes that through the day and the season.

A common mistake is choosing a projection that covers the table at noon but leaves it in full sun by late afternoon. During the consultation we look at which way the wall faces and when you use the space most, then recommend a width, projection and pitch that put the shade where you sit. Larger sizes may need more fixings or a different wall attachment, which we confirm on site.

Manual or motorized operation.

Manual cassette awnings use a crank handle that hooks into a gearbox. They are simple and need no power, but extending a large awning by hand takes some effort. Motorized awnings use a tubular motor inside the roller and open with a remote or wall switch, which makes it far more likely you will actually use the awning every day. With optional sensors, a motorized awning can also respond to weather conditions automatically.

Climate considerations for Atlantic Canada and beyond.

Retractable awnings are designed for sun and light rain, not storms. In Atlantic Canada, where coastal wind can rise quickly, the safest habit is to retract the awning whenever you leave the house and whenever wind picks up. A motorized awning with a wind sensor makes that easier.

Snow and ice are another reason to close the awning: fabric is not built to carry weight, and the cassette protects it through the winter. Across Canada and the northern US, most owners use their awning from late spring to early fall and keep it closed in the off-season. Mounting position also matters; a wall exposed to prevailing winds or salt spray deserves extra thought during the site visit.

Maintenance.

Because the cassette shields the fabric, maintenance is light.

Installation and the measurements we need.

A cassette awning is heavy when extended and puts real load on the wall, so the mounting surface and fixings matter as much as the awning itself. Wood-frame, brick, block and concrete walls each need different anchors, and siding sometimes needs blocking behind it.

To prepare a quote we look at the width of the area you want to shade, the projection (how far out from the wall the awning should reach), the mounting height and clearance above doors and windows, the wall construction, any obstructions such as lights, vents or downspouts, and the location of power for a motorized awning. In Atlantic Canada we take these measurements on site; customers elsewhere can share photos and dimensions during a virtual consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a full cassette retractable awning?

It is a retractable awning whose fabric, roller tube and arms close completely into an aluminium housing when the awning is retracted, protecting the fabric from weather and debris.

Is a cassette awning better than an open-roller awning?

A cassette awning protects the fabric and mechanism when closed and looks cleaner on the wall. An open-roller awning costs less and can work well under an overhang or on a sheltered wall.

Can I leave a cassette awning out in the wind or rain?

Retractable awnings are made for sun and light rain. Retract the awning in strong wind, heavy rain and snow, and whenever you are away. A motorized awning with a wind sensor makes this easier.

Should I choose a manual or motorized cassette awning?

Manual awnings use a crank and need no power. Motorized awnings open with a remote or switch and are easier to use daily, especially on larger sizes.

What measurements are needed for a cassette awning quote?

We need the width to shade, the desired projection, the mounting height and clearance, the wall construction, any obstructions on the wall and the location of power for a motorized model.

Do you install cassette awnings outside Atlantic Canada?

We install in person across Atlantic Canada. Elsewhere in Canada and the USA we can supply the awning through a free virtual consultation for local installation.
