Full Cassette Retractable Awning

Smart motorised outdoor shade. Custom-sized, UV-resistant, and fully enclosed when retracted.

All fabrics are 100% solution-dyed acrylic Spanish fabric by Sauleda — meaning the colour is locked into the fibre itself and will not fade. Backed by a 10-year warranty and 8-year colour fastness guarantee.

Standard wall-mounted installation for most residential and commercial facades

Width is dictated by the wall or deck you are shading; projection is the decision that determines whether the awning actually works. A 2 m projection shades a bistro table and a doorway. Shading a full dining set with chairs pulled out needs 3 m or more, and a deck used through the middle of the day needs the projection to reach past the furniture at noon, when the sun is highest and the shadow shortest. As a rule of thumb, the usable shade at midday is roughly two-thirds of the projection on a south-facing wall, and closer to the full projection on east and west exposures.

A retractable awning is a sun device, not a roof. A steeper pitch (typically 15–25°) sheds light rain and stops water pooling in the fabric, but it also lowers the front bar and cuts headroom and view. A shallower pitch keeps the space open and airy but holds water. For Atlantic Canadian patios we usually set a moderate pitch and advise retracting in sustained rain — a pocket of standing water weighs far more than most homeowners expect and is the single most common cause of frame damage.

Coastal wind is the defining constraint here. A full cassette seals the fabric, roller tube and motor inside an extruded aluminium housing when retracted, so salt air, grit, UV and freeze–thaw cycles never touch the components — the difference between a fabric that lasts a decade and one that goes brittle and streaked in three seasons. When extended, the awning should be treated as a fair-weather structure: we specify wind sensors on motorized units so the awning retracts automatically before a gust front arrives, which is the standard we recommend for any exposed harbour-side or oceanfront property.

The awning transfers substantial leverage into whatever it is fixed to. Wall mounting into solid masonry or into structural framing (not just sheathing or siding) is ideal; soffit and roof mounts are available where a header is unavailable. On decks or pergolas we verify the post and beam sizing before quoting, and where the structure cannot take the load we specify a freestanding frame instead. Every installation includes a site measure — we do not ship a bracket kit and hope.

Solution-dyed acrylic holds colour under UV far better than printed polyester, and open-weave technical fabrics let heat escape rather than trapping it under the canopy. Lighter fabrics reflect more heat but show organic staining from trees and gulls; mid-tone and patterned fabrics hide it. Because the underside colour tints everything beneath it, we recommend viewing samples outdoors, in daylight, before committing.

Retract the awning when the property is unattended, before storms, and for the winter. Rinse the fabric with plain water a couple of times a season and let it dry fully extended before closing — rolling away damp fabric is what causes mildew spotting. Motors and wind sensors need no seasonal service beyond a visual check of the cassette seal each spring.

Light rain on a properly pitched awning is fine and will run off the front bar. Sustained or heavy rain should not be — water pools in the fabric, and the weight can bend the arms or pull the mounting. Motorized units can be fitted with a rain sensor alongside the wind sensor.
